More award winning international artists added to Musicport Festival line up

The rather magical Indoor Festival of the Year 2013 (Fatea Awards) Musicport Festival release news of more of the award winning artists who have been added to their 2014 line.

This years award winning Musicport Festival - Indoor Festival of the Year 2013: Fatea Awards – is well and truly taking shape with more top national and international award winning artists having been added to the line-up including, a rare opportunity to see the award winning Lo’Jo, Scotland’s finest Idlewild, award winning Tamikrest who are Mali’s new young stars of Saharan music, Poland’s Mosaik with their Slavic wildness, melancholy, and oriental mystery sounds, the unique interpretation of Balkan music from Hungary’s Zuros Banda, Haddo with the brilliant sounds of Will Pound and the in-demand fiddle and viola performer Nicky Pound, the mesmerising and hypnotic Suzy Condrad and many, many more still to be confirmed.

The Songlines Awards 2014 winners have just been announced and they include Musicport Festival’s Sunday headliners Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita who have won the Cross - Cultural Collaboration award, Bassekou Kouyate the Best Artist award & Tamikrest the Best Group award and they will join over 50 acts across 5 stages in one intimate & beautifully decorated venue.

As well as performances from some of the nations best world music artists, educational and musical workshops will also be held across the weekend at Whitby Pavilion for all ages.

Being held in the Pavilion at one of the UK’s most beautiful and charming seaside resorts of Whitby, North Yorkshire, with an abundance of quality places to eat, drink and stay, makes for a truly unique festival.

Musicport welcomes festival goers of all ages with it’s safe and indoor surroundings – guaranteeing a warm and wonderful festival, whatever the weather!

The festival, which is run by an a largely volunteer crew, will build on its fourteen years of experience of bringing the highest quality cultural experience to the Yorkshire coast in friendly fun-packed weekend that will end the 2014  festival season on a wonderfully high note.

LO'JO (France) - Any attempt to define and categorize the Lo’Jo sound quickly degenerates into a fools errand. A rare opportunity to see the Songlines Award Winner (Best Group 2013) in concert in the UK

Catrin Finch & Sekou Keita (Wales/Senegal)– stunning meeting of top Welsh harp player & master Senegalese kora player. (Songlines Award Winners: Cross - Cultural Collaboration)

The Crazy World of Arthur Brown – Return home of Whitby's most famous son and homecoming of the God Of Hellfire. "If there was a rock museum to go and visit, one of the most memorable glass cabinets will have Arthur Brown in all his face painted, god of hellfire, glory."

IDLEWILD (acoustic) - Return of Scottish legends after a 4 year sojourn . Fronted by Roddy Woomble, performing one of only 2 planned dates in England in a stripped back acoustic show . They are currently recording a new album.

AMINE & HAMZA (Tunisia) Celebrated worldwide as geniuses on their oriental instruments the oud and the kanun

 

Robyn Hitchcock from his days in The Soft Boys to his current cult status , one of the UK’s great  musical heroes

 

Jesse Bannister's Play Out featuring Zoe Rahman – new quartet led by Indo- jazz saxophonist Jesse, MOBO Award-winning pianist Zoe Rahman & Mercury Prize-nominated drummer Seb Rochford alongside Corrine Bailey Rae bassist Kenny Higgins.

AMIRA KHEIR (Sudan) hailed as the Diva of the Sudanese Desert and is one of the most popular folk musicians to emerge from Sudan in the last decade.

NEW ROPE STRING BAND Once seen, never forgotten: an indefinable confusion of superb musicianship and side-splitting comic genius

Zűrös Banda (Hungary) - Authentic yet unique interpretation of Balkan music from well known musicians who came together as a band in 2013.

TANTZ – remarkable & energetic young klezmer band from Leeds

 

Tamikrest (Mali)- New young stars of Saharan music -the hypnotic desert blues popularised in recent years by their heroes Tinariwen and given a political edge and distinctive rousing style by these Tuareg musicians who sing in their native Tamasheq and Songlines Best Group Award winners 2014.

Musicport is a not for profit community business promoting live music and music education on the Yorkshire coast.

 

Musicport was established in 2000 to promote live music and music education in Whitby and the surrounding area with its primary event being Musicport World Music Festival each autumn. Over the last fourteen years the festival has grown year on year and has established itself as a prestigious event in the festival calendar attracting major names such as Rachid Taha, The Buena Vista Social Club presents Cachaito Lopez etc, Toumani Diabate, Levellers,Misty In Roots, Courtney Pine, Talvin Singh, Richard Hawley, Hugh Masekela,  Chumbawamba, Altan,  Mory Kante, Osibisa, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, & Los De Abajo.

2008 saw a major change with the festival moving to Bridlington from Whitby but in 2012 it returned to its spiritual home in Whitby where it will remain.

 

As well as the festival Musicport also run a regular concert programme at The Compass Club in Whitby.  Artists who have appeared as part of their concert programme in the past include Jah Wobble’s Invaders Of The Heart, Midge Ure, Daby Balde , Yusa, The Easy Star All Stars, Hazel O’Connor, Asere, Black Umfolosi, Sharron Shannon, Waterson Carthy, & Kate Rusby.

Musicport are partners in the North Yorkshire Youth Music Action Zone and run a regular programme of education workshops and activities.
