Musicport has recently heard it has been awarded a grant of £41k from Arts Council England to help develop, over the next year, its infrastructure and to support its programme of activities including its high profile international festival in October.

Jim McLaughlin Musicport director said “In these difficult times it is good that the value of what we do for this part of the coast is recognised and the economics of this level of funding will impact on the local economy in a very positive way. Having struggled to keep the festival going for the last 3 years  and overseen its move back home to Whitby, the not for profit organisation can now begin to look forward to developing Musicport once again into a recognised international brand but with very local roots and a strong support locally,  regionally and nationally”.

Having recently gained The Fatea Magazine Indoor Festival Of The Year Award 2013, Musicport has also been short-listed for Outstanding Festival in the Yorkshire Gig Guide Grass Roots Awards. The results will be announced on 8th August.  “We are particularly pleased to be short-listed for this award as this was an open public vote and it shows that even a relatively small festival when matched against the Yorkshire “big boys” we punch way above our weight when it comes to both profile and the level of dedication and support of our audience and participants”

Musicport also held a FREE ENTRY party night on 2nd August at Whitby Pavilion with DJs and live music in the café “This was a bit of a thank-you to everyone who has supported us through to this point. With live music from George Husband & Kate Lavery, The Twangs & Ten Foot Tom & Leprosy Crooks, DJ sets from Mister Tooley, Mick Cloudbase, Bird & more it was a great night with an auction of rare vinyl donated by a local supporter and the unveiling of our new geodesic dome which will become a focal point of lots of activity at the festival in October” Says festival organiser Jim McLaughlin.

New additions to the festival line-up include comedian Mitch Benn, Eduardo Niebla (Spain), Maia , The Hut People & Mim Suleiman (Zanzibar).  Another new feature at the festival will be the Sol Cinema, the worlds smallest cinema, where an audience of 8 are treated with red carpet, usherettes and popcorn to a cinematic experience for short films in a beautifully converted caravan.
