Regina Spektor and Of Montreal violinist releases solo album

Kishi Bashi announces release of ‘151a’ on May 6th 2013 via Joyful Noise Recordings + UK shows

Cat No: JNR92 - Formats: White Vinyl, Black Vinyl, CD, and Digital

“No other album got this big or beautiful” NPR

 “Enchanting”  Metro

“…a weightless, cartwheeling, electro-pop romp that’s all fizz and no fuss” SPIN

“The music is off-kilter, particularly the opening chants and swirl of guitar and drums. The middle section though takes a more even-keeled approach to pop, balancing the looped whistles with peaceful, yet evocative vocals.”  Consequence of Sound

Having collaborated and toured with indie strangelings of Montreal, Regina Spektor and Sondre Lerche, singer, violinist and composer K Ishibashi (aka Kishi Bashi) has embarked on an epic solo project.

Already picking up play on Radio 1 and BBC 6Music, for “It All Began With A Burst” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JqDgrnaMC4 - (a song which soundtracked a recent Sony advert), Kishi Bashi’s debut full-length, 151a, finally gets a UK release on May 6th 2013 via Joyful Noise Recordings. Twitmusic will be streaming the album on their homepage from April 28th – May 6th via Kishi Bashi’s twitter @kishi-bashi.

A literal translation of the numbers 151 and single letter ‘a’ in Japanese, ‘ichi go ichi e,’ is a homophone of a phrase meaning, roughly, “enjoy every encounter for it may never come again.” This follow-up to his summer 2011 Room For Dream EP, is a bright and soaring avant-pop record primarily written on violin.

Produced and played entirely by Kishi Bashi, the lead track “Intro/Pathos, Pathos” is a soaring yet concise amalgam of what is to come. The record unfolds with the deconstructed doo-wop of “Wonder Woman, Wonder Me”, a 21st Century transmission of Smile-era Brian Wilson and continues with the menacing marriage of Eastern hues and Western operatics in “Beat the Bright out of Me”. This album is mediation between opposing drives, offering possible reconciliation but never promising it.  The bouncy, infectious "Bright Whites" is one of those perfect pop songs that will just implant itself in the back of your head. In fact, you may have already gotten the bug: It's featured in Microsoft's Windows 8 ad campaign.

Kishi Bashi has just finished a sold out headline North American tour, and will be playing festivals throughout the spring and summer. He also makes his first visit to the UK in May, playing the following shows:
