M.I.A. on London nightlife: 'Counter-culture gets sucked up by the mainstream'

M.I.A. has revealed that she is excited to be curating this year’s Meltdown Festival at London’s Southbank Centre and can't wait to give something back to the city.

When asked about her views of London's nightlife at last night's NME Awards ceremony, she explained that it is changing a lot thanks to social media bringing counter-culture into the mainstream arena:

“What we were really good at [in the past] is having counter-culture and alternative culture and sort of letting it brew. It’s always been buzzy and vibrant. But now, because the counter-culture gets sucked up by the mainstream so quick, we don’t have that.”

“And social media obviously plays a part in that sort of thing, so it’s just a sign of the times. But I don’t think it’s particular to London, it’s everywhere.”

She also picked up the Best British Female prize at the NME Awards yesterday (February 15) and opened up about her support of the Help Refugees charity: “It’s really fucking simple. I worked with them last year and I went to Athens, I saw the work they did. It’s also the [charity] that got Lily Allen into loads of shit. They do amazing work and they’re working with NME tonight.”
