Morrissey declines offer to record alternative Christmas Day TV message

Music icon Morrissey has turned down an offer to film an alternative Christmas Day television message for Channel 4 in the UK.

The channel was planning to broadcast the 'Meat Is Murder' singer's speech at the same time as the BBC's broadcast of the Queen's speech, but Morrissey has revealed that he isn't interested in taking part. He issued a statement about his decision, which reads:

"My view that the monarchy should be quietly dismantled for the good of England is reasonably well-known, but I don't think Christmas Day is quite the time to be trading slaps."

"The Queen should be allowed the impassioned trance of her annual address to the British people, if only to once again prove that, in her frozen posture, she has nothing to offer and nothing to say."

Back in 2011, Morrissey slammed the royal family and described them as 'benefit scroungers' when asked if he would watch the wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton:

"Why would I watch the wedding? Why would I watch it? I couldn't take any of that seriously. I don't think the so-called royal family speak for England now and I don't think England needs them. I do seriously believe that they are benefit scroungers and nothing else. I don't believe they serve any purpose whatsoever."
