Nicki Minaj on fame: 'We care so much about what the world thinks that we don't live'

Rapper Nicki Minaj has revealed that the music industry can be really damaging to people's careers and half the time artists don't realise the negative impact it's having on them.

Speaking to Fader magazine about the speech she gave recently at the BET Awards, in which she told the crowd that she thought she was dying but didn't want to call an ambulance in fear that she would be splashed all over TMZ's site, Minaj explained that it was a metaphor about how people live in the spotlight:

"I was making a point to say that the business kills so many people and we don't even realise it. I can only imagine how many people in this business have died because they may not have wanted to... to be embarrassed publicly. We care so much about what the world thinks that we don't live, really."

The 'Pills N Potions' superstar told AMP radio that she's really excited abut her new album because she feels like she's in a great place and can write more openly:

"I just have to say that I’m at such a different place as a human being. I know artists say that all the time but now I understand why. Nothing really surprises me anymore. I handle things more maturely. Just writing-wise I can put my thoughts together better I feel."
