Nicki Minaj on public image: 'I know I'm always gonna be street'

'Roman's Revenge' hitmaker Nicki Minaj is "always gonna be street" despite experimenting with musical genres outside of her roots in hip-hop.

The rap sensation explained to MTV News that she will never try to be anyone else and her upbringing helped shaped the woman she is today, so there's no way she will turn her back on where she came from:

"I'm still me, hip-hop culture is still in my heart. That can never leave me. I know I'm always gonna be street, because I can't pretend to be street. It's a lot of people walking around here pretending to be that, but I ain't gonna call nobody out right now."

She also joked that because of how people have reacted to her finding fame she isn't even sure how to prove her dedication to the genre anymore so may need to do something drastic to maintain or restore her credibility:

"What can I say? I don't know what I gotta do anymore. I don't know what I can possibly do. What I gotta do? Go and rob a bank?"
