Nicki Minaj: 'The music industry is like a high school popularity contest'

Rap superstar Nicki Minaj has revealed that the music industry is no different to being at high school because it's so concerned with popularity and status.

The 'Starships' hitmaker told Teen Vogue magazine that she refuses to "be nice to someone just because they're hot right now" and doesn't enjoy the competitive aspect of the business side:

"People treat this business like it's high school. It can absolutely feel like one big popularity contest, and you know what? I can't be bothered. I can't allow myself to play ridiculous games with grown adults in the industry. I can't be nice to someone just because they're hot right now. I can't do it."

During the same interview, Minaj also opened up about how she dealt with bullying as a teenager: "I encountered jealous girls a lot. What it came down to is that the bullies wanted me to bow down to them and I just wouldn't. Sometimes there'd be a fight, sometimes not. I let people know I wasn't going to be pushed around."
