Austin has just released “Paola”, his first single since his debut project Good Sex, released in 2017. “Paola” is a fresh take on a vintage 60s sound with the feel of a new-era r&b record. Laced with haunting vocals and eerie-yet-sexy groove, “Paola” is the perfect first look into Austin Sexton’s upcoming EP of the same name.Check out his interview below!

Tell us about yourself and your music?

I live in LA now, but originally I’m from a small town in Pennsylvania. I grew up on oldies from the 60s and 70s era. Whenever I was in the car with my dad, that’s all I’d hear, so I think that influence has always been in my music. I produce my own stuff so my my sound and lyrics are for sure captured in the moment. It’s fair to say when I’m caught up in my “feels”, something is bound to come out

How would you describe your sound?

Purely alternative. People have said I remind them of an urban Tame Impala. Kevin Parker is one of my GOATS though so I can’t comprehend that. But I’d say my sound is a take on the 60s with hints of modern R&B + song structure.

Talk about the experience making your single?

Essentially, I was going through some lady problems. Going back and forth between whether to stay or go. We’ve all be through it. But there was a point where I felt as if I had the upper hand. Where no matter what, she’d come to me rather than me going to her- no matter what she said or what I’d hear through the grapevine. Thus the line, “I heard you have a boyfriend, but he don’t do the things I do to you”. The song is about having the upper hand in a toxic relationship. And honestly, in these situations no one has the upper hand, but I figured I’d make it sound “cool”. Haha. That’s the story behind the song itself but the “Paola” music video has a different theme. I’m really happy with how the video turned out. It’ll be out on July 24th.

What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?

The PAOLA EP which will be out July 30th. It’s a 5 song EP in the same genre stylistically as the lead single “Paola”. Very alternative. Super proud of this. I’m also currently working on some new music for the fall. I really want to just keep chipping away at the music. I’m playing at Harlowe in West Hollywood this Sunday, July 22nd, and on October 5th I’m playing with The Maria’s in Santa Barbara. Andddddd (fingers xd) I’ll be playing with Toro Y Moi in November.

What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?

Hard to say. I’ve gotten to open for a number of mainstream artists in the last three years. But this year I landed SUPERDUPERKYLE’s lead single from his new album. I co-produced it and the reception has been pretty awesome. Oh, and producing Demrick’s entire Came A Long Way album, which just came out.. That was one hell of an experience.

Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s)
Ideal?

Hmmm….. I mean I’m a huge John Mayer fan. I’d prob put John Mayer, Donald Glover, Tame Impala, Pharrell, and myself in a room and hope for the best.

Name something random that people do not know about you?

I’ve never gotten a W on Fortnite. Pretty embarrassing.

What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?

Indie means DIY 100%. But I wouldn’t want it any other way. People are way nicer, and it’s not about ego. Indie is collaborating to make the coolest records out. And you have full control of it.

What can we expect from you in the future?

Tour. A really good tour. And great music for years to come.
