Fresh from a roster of sessions, which includes rising stars Callum Beattie and Rianne Downey, Riverside Music TV has announced their latest live session performance, bringing Glasgow three-piece Fatherson to the stage. Ross, Marc, and Greg deliver three of their favourite tracks in an exclusive RMTV performance, with Ross also sharing his thoughts on the band’s sound and songwriting process.

He adds, “We're the best version that this band has ever been…and in six months we'll be a better version of that.”

This intimate showcase includes ‘Making Waves’ from their third album, Sum of All Your Parts, ‘Crying Wolf’ from their latest project, Normal Fears, and their latest single ‘Piece of Mind,’ a track that sees the band take their anthemic indie-rock sound down a more dark and brooding route.

“The songwriting Dynamic changes all the time. Sometimes, I'll have a full song, and I'll bring it to them, and then we'll arrange it together. Sometimes I'll have a couple of chords, and we'll bash it around. The most effective way that we've ever done it is just to get into a room and play as loud as you can. And then, if you still remember what you played, then it was probably good.”

Ross is constantly saving voice memos with ideas for lyrics and sounds, getting involved in the production of the band’s music. He likes to bring something new and exciting to every track, experimenting with electronic effects to ensure the Fatherson sound constantly evolves. But as much as they love to experiment, Ross says that’s all just in the search for a good song; at the end of the day, everything gets taken back to an acoustic guitar, and if it doesn’t work without all ‘the gumph' then it gets worked on.

About

Fatherson’s alt-rock sound was formed in Kilmarnock, a few miles south-west of Glasgow and consists of Ross Leighton on guitar and lead vocals, Marc Strain on bass and Greg Walkinshaw taking up the mantle of drummer. Releasing four studio albums, their first way back in 2014, the band has seen continued chart success, all four of their full-lengths cracking the top 20 of the Scottish Albums Chart. Support from BBC Radio 1 led to a performance on the BBC Introducing stage at T in the Park, also gracing the likes of Glasgow Barrowlands, The Great Escape and Stag & Dagger. The trio also landed a European arena tour supporting Lewis Capaldi following the release of their third album in 2018.

Fatherson describes their latest record, Normal Fears, as the most diverse they’ve ever made. It pushes the boundaries of the band’s core values and harnesses a sense of songwriting euphoria around Ross’s introspective lyricism.
