Championing artists across Scotland, Riverside Music TV is fresh off the back of sessions with the likes of Rhianne Downey and ILI. Back with their latest instalment, RMTV bring indie hero Kyle Falconer into the limelight. The episode sees The View frontman perform two tracks from his latest solo album, ‘No Love Songs for Laura,’ as well as reflect on his time on the road and his ever-developing artistry.

The first track to be performed in the session is ‘Stress Ball’. Released in 2021, the single forges dynamic melodies alongside an anthemic, feel-good chorus to provide a euphoric performance.
Written in LA, Falconer comments, “I was out in LA for a month, just after the birth of my second daughter, Winnie. I felt about leaving, but I was thinking ‘I'll be your stress ball’ and that's what the song is about, I wanted them to take their fears out on me”

Reflecting on his time on the road in the early days of The View, Falconer explains how he felt the pressure to write about the ‘sex, drugs & rock ‘n’ roll’ image that the industry was promoting then. When the group took a hiatus in 2017, he took the opportunity to go out, meet other artists and expand his creative horizons.

Following the release of his second solo album, Kyle and his partner Laura adapted the album into a musical, with the pair splitting composing and script writing respectively. The musical dealt with the experiences they had shared and suffered over the years. It’s the story of their relationship and their encounters with post-natal depression.

“It’s about two characters who are meant to be me and Laura”, Kyle adds. “We tried to read it out as ‘Kyle’ and ‘Laura’, but it was too close to the bone. I remember having to leave the room, we had to tone it down as it was just too heavy. You have to see it. It’s probably one of the proudest things I've ever done.”

The second track in the session is ‘Laura’. Written about Falconer’s last rehab session, the track came at a poignant moment - just before the birth of his first daughter. It combines a laid-back attitude with sentimental lyricism and an alluring hook. Hitting the climax of the chorus, the true beauty of Falconer’s emotive songwriting is on display as he navigates each note with sheer creative honesty.
