Today sees Rina Sawayama, the London based emerging popstar, return with her new single ‘Flicker’ - out now on the [PIAS] imprint Different Recordings.

Listen & share below.

Following on from her critically acclaimed single ‘Cherry’, Sawayama continues to carve her definitive path of intelligent pop with her most recent release ‘Flicker’.

Written by Rina and produced by close friend and collaborator Clarence Clarity, the new single sees Rina pursue subject matters close to her heart as she laments “when you're down, feeling low, just remember your name, they ain’t us, they ain’t us baby.”

Speaking about the new single Rina explains: “The first day of reception year at school my teacher totally butchered my surname while calling out the register. I remember crying so hard and that was the first time I realised that I was different to all the others in class. When I was writing Flicker I was thinking how our name shapes our experience in life and identities us in a deeper way than we realise. Whether it's a name that no one can say, or the frustration of being misgendered, or quite simply being misunderstood for who you truly are- this is a song for you  #theyaintus”

The past 12 months has seen Rina tour the UK and US extensively whilst also team up with Shamir on her track 'Tunnel Vision', appear on the cover of Clash Magazine and Sunday Times Style as well as perform with Charli XCX at her Pop 2 London show, film a Vogue Meets feature and collaborate with Nicola Formichetti and i-D for her ‘Ordinary Superstar’ video – watch below.

This autumn saw Rina back on the road with her wigs, outfit changes and dance breaks that left her fans screaming for more as she took her Ordinary Superstar Tour to the US seeing her play venues such as NYC’s Bowery Ballroom before finishing off the tour back in her hometown to a sold out show at London’s Heaven.

Rina will also be joining Years & Years at the O2 this December 5th to perform a handful of tracks as part of their new show “Rendezvous” which sees the band bring together a selection of emerging LGBTQ+ artists and allies creating a unique and inclusive showcase.
