Brothers Mark and Rob Brandon - aka MODEL MAN - today release their brand new single ‘WHY?’ via Mahogany Recordings, taken from their upcoming EP ‘Don’t Cry’, out August 14th and available now for pre-order BELOW. Listen to ‘Why?’ BELOW

‘Why?’ keeps the groove heavy but features acoustic instruments and keeps the upright piano at the heart of the track, transcending the soundscape beyond the samples-only approach dominating dance music today. Written “on a toy piano during a power cut, then recorded and pitched down for the final melody” it shows Model Man’s ability to deftly juxtapose the euphoric moments with melancholy throughout their creative production.

Growing up in a musical household with a classical pianist mother and a father obsessed with Chicago house and soul, the influences are plain to see on this lead track and throughout the ‘Don’t Cry’ EP. This collision of worlds remains embodied in the working relationship between the brothers and is central to their process - “I have a love of form,” says Mark, “Rob has a love of chaos.” It’s this synthesis that makes for such abstract yet absorbing compositions; tracks that sound as good in the club as they do through your headphones alone at 2am.

‘Why?’ follows the January release of the duo’s ‘Beta Songs’ EP, a six-track collection of refracted, sparkling electronic music, as well as a selection of remixes for the likes of MJ Cole, Alan Fitzpatrick, Willaris K and Prospa. To support ‘Beta Songs’ the band debuted their live show with a full 4-piece band performance at Hackney warehouse space Studio 9294, which merged live electronics and virtuoso piano elements with reactive, algorithmically controlled visuals - watch back ‘The Hill’ live HERE. The band also performed for the BBC’s Introducing Stage at The Radio 1 Big Weekend, with Mark appearing solo for a live set centred around his upright piano - watch ‘Clarity’ back HERE.

Model Man broke through with last year’s ‘City Songs’ EP and standout singles ‘Ketones’ and ‘Beta’, both accompanied by stunning videos directed by Rob, who along with directing videos for the likes of Crystal Fighters and Gold Panda, handles all visual output for the band.
