Following the release of her debut EP ‘EnRoot’ last year, Tia Carys is back with the incredible ‘Refugee’ freestyle. The hard-hitting freestyle explores themes of Carys tough upbringing and discovering music with semantics of struggle, authoring and personal growth. Carys raps effortlessly over the near three-minute track, showcasing her rap prowess through the combination of critically upfront lyrics and demanding rhymes. The accompanying sepia-filtered video sees Carys in the studio delivering her bars with numerous destructive clips of the Powerpuff Girls edited in.

Speaking about ‘Refugee’, Carys says… “There’s a lot of underlying pain in this one. I remember being in the situation and my only saving grace was knowing that in a few years’ time, it will give me more of an incredible story to write about and share when I have my dream career. Now life’s done a full 180.”

Carys will also take to the 1Xtra stage this year at both Reading and Leeds Festival later this month.

About

Tia Carys kickstarted her way into the music scene with a DIY approach by dropping bold and honest freestyles on social media which led to co-signs from the likes of Nadia Rose, Wretch 32, Chip, Avelino and the late Cadet. Making a mean statement of arrival, 20-year-old Tia released her heavily supported breakout single ‘English x Ghana’ in 2019, which Carys spoke on her mixed-race identity and connecting with her Ghanaian heritage. Receiving early support from the likes of The Fader, GQ, Clash, The Independent, Annie Mac and DJ Target, Tia Carys is one to watch. Tia’s debut EP, EnRoot was released soon afterwards, in which the 5-track collection spoke directly about the challenges that young people face growing up.
