Tom Rasmussen (pronouns they/them) announce the details of their debut album Body Building, out March 27th on Globe Town Records. They also share new single Street Violence, featuring French cultural figure and muse Michèle Lamy. The bouncing electronica track opens with a simple synth ostinato before expanding into an out & out house hit, with Tom’s stunning vocals and lyrical poignancy taking centre stage. Street Violence tackles an ever present theme across Body Building, the day to day struggles and societal portrayal of those that are gender non-conforming. With the news of their debut album on the way, Tom also announces their biggest headline show to date, at London’s ICA on March 29th. They will also be supporting Self Esteem on a run of her UK dates starting from today. (Full list below).

Speaking on the album Tom adds - "Body Building is the culmination of a decade thinking about what it means to be different to other people, but in a way so many people have felt too. It’s about grieving a part of you that has been taken by others, it’s about escaping violence, it’s about accepting — and attempting to thrive in — reality and not simply fantasy. It is the last time I want to talk about all the violence I’ve experienced in my life as a queer femme person. But never say never. It is dedicated to queer people and trans people everywhere."

Tom enlisted some close friends & important voices within the trans community to join them on the record as features within brief interludes, including award winning writer, performer and theatre maker Travis Alabanza; editor, journalist, presenter and Sunday Times bestselling writer Shon Faye; and iconic DJ & Music Writer Princess Julia.

These interludes are moving declarations which both celebrate, and complicate, ideas of radical self acceptance and empowerment, perfect companions to Tom’s music which tackles deeply personal issues and simultaneously universal feelings on love, complex identity and where to find true freedom.

Having worked across fashion, publishing, and television Tom’s first venture into solo music was debut single “Fantasy Island Obsession”, released last year via Globe Town Records. Soon to follow was a string of singles varying in genre, ranging from beautifully stark piano balladry on “Joy (Live)" and the summery pop-smash “Fabulous Opera”. Most recent single ‘Dysphoria’, is a shimmering cut of alternative, emotive, dance pop, that see Tom’s stunning vocal performance float easily on top of a House imbued piano beat, and was praised by the likes of NME & The Line Of Best Fit.

The new sound and direction is an amalgamation of all they’ve learned in over a decade of working at the helm of culture. Exploring the (de)construction of an alter-ego, always working to access the honesty and emotion of both the queer and the human experience, their first foray into music marries their writing, their taste, their politics and hopefully their voice. They also recently joined Rina Sawayama on her UK & Ireland tour, sharing their intimate yet explosive live show to a wide array of new fans across the country, with Hot Press Magazine describing the show as “euphoric” with “soaring dance choruses and plenty of high art drama.”
