For those who saw the tour in its first incarnation, we promise to keep the intensity up, the two-hands, one-mouthiness up, the no-computeriness up, and also perform a bunch of tunes not played on the original tour.
For all virgins, please enjoy for the first time our two hands and one mouth.”
Ron and Russell Mael
In October 2012 the ‘Two Hands One Mouth’ European tour saw the American brothers tour as a duo for the first time. With no band & no computers, Ron (two hands…on keyboards) and Russell (one mouth…on vocals) presented the very essence of Sparks and their extensive catalogue in a show of impact, energy and aggression.
Praise for Sparks - Two Hands One Mouth Tour included: ‘Top 5 Gigs Of 2012’ - The Independent ‘Gig of the year? Quite possibly...’ - LouderThanWar ‘The number one band in heaven...or on earth for that matter’ - Gigjunkies ‘Ron and Russell retain the muscle, the gravitas of the original but add a rare sparsity.’ - Clash Music ‘a feat of stamina and courage and brilliance’ - The Quietus
America responded in a similarly positive manner when, in spring 2013, Sparks took their hands and mouth around their homeland. “To our ears they sounded heavenly” (SF Weekly); “last night’s Sparks show was the kind of transcendental experience I always hope a live show will deliver” (LA Record); “It was particularly impressive how Sparks managed to translate their meticulously produced albums to their minimalist stage setup. Somehow, though the group used only vocals and keyboards, the performances were flawless. Who needs a backing band? (Diffuser) - are just a small sample of the acclaim that the tour received.
The duo will now return to the stage with a new show ‘The Revenge Of Two Hands One Mouth’ that will feature many songs and Sparksian delights not performed on the previous tour. As Sparks will be focusing on their next studio project in 2014, this autumn tour is expected to be the last opportunity to witness the band perform in this format.
“Few bands have been so consistently odd and consistently great” - Q “Ultimately Two Hands One Mouth is like Sparks themselves, unusual, disquieting and striking” - Record Collector ‘In any sane universe Sparks are big. It’s pop that got small.’ - Independent on Sunday
