Robbie Williams paid over £1 million to leave Take That

Robbie Williams has revealed that he paid a large sum of money in order to leave the boy band Take That back in the ‘90s.

In an interview with Radio 4, Williams told host John Wilson how he managed to end his contract with the band in 1995 when he was 19 years old.

The ‘Swings Both Ways’ crooner explained:

“For reasons that I can’t go into, because certain people like suing me and they like winning, there was a big need for me to get out of my contract and out of that record company.

Williams revealed that it cost him “a million and half to get out of the deal” – a sum that was higher than his actual earnings.

Robbie divulged: “I ended up coming out of Take That owing £500,000.”

When asked whether he walked away from Take That or was sacked, Robbie replied:

“A bit of both.”

The 39-year-old singer went into details over his decision to leave Take That after completing one final tour with his band mates but ended up being asked to leave prior to the commencement of said tour so that the remaining four members could prove they were still a viable act as a quartet.

Robbie eventually rejoined Take That in 2010 to record the album 'Progress'.
