MORE FROM SCOTTISH SINGER JACK ROBERTSON AHEAD OF HIS DEBUT SOLO RELEASE

Sam Smith web sensation, Jack Robertson, chats to Press Party ahead of his debut solo release

You were a bit of a child star, tell us about how you first stepped into the musical spotlight?

Hi Press Party, thanks for giving me the opportunity to say Hi to your readers!

I have been singing in public since I was 8 years old through school and then by the age of 12 I was singing regularly in charity events such as the Forth 1 Awards in Edinburgh. I remember sharing the stage with Jason Donovan, Sharleen Spiteri, James Blunt, Alisha Dixon and the Stereophonics which was all very exciting!!

Then you were in a boyband up in Scotland, how did that come about?

I saw an advert on social media for a boy band and went along to the audition and was selected. We had great fun and I made some life-long friends from that time. However, I wanted to write and perform my own material and the framework didn’t exist for that in the group so I left to go solo.

The life of a boy-band member looks super exciting, tell us what that time was like.

We did a huge number of shows, mainly in Scotland, and had some fantastic fans who were very supportive. Again we did a lot for charities such as Cash For Kids and performed at ‘Turning on the Christmas Lights’ parties in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Then overnight you became a web hit when you uploaded your acoustic of Sam Smith’s ‘Writing on the Wall’…why did you choose that song are you a fan?

We wanted to do a youtube cover that would get attention and knew that Sam Smith singing the new James Bond theme tune would be massive. It was kept top secret by his label and we knew a few days in advance that Radio 1 were going to have the exclusive on the Breakfast Show on a Friday morning. So I caught the train down that morning and learnt it on the way down and one of my producers (Ian Curnow) programmed up the track in 5 hours as I was on the train and we recorded it in the afternoon and filmed it on an iPhone and uploaded it to youtube that evening. I had no idea at the time though that it would get such a massive reaction, even my local radio station in Edinburgh played it!

Did you expect to receive over 100,000 hits in less than a day, that’s gotta have been a surprise?

We had no idea it would turn out to be so popular, I guess the song is so strong plus everybody loves James Bond (and Sam Smith) that it stood a good chance of doing well - providing I didn’t fluff it!!

When did you start writing with your London team?

About one year ago I started working out of a studio called Strongroom in Shoreditch with a team of upcoming producers. We spend a lot of time in the studio refining everything until we are completely happy with .

How would you describe your sound?

We put a lot of emphasis on the lyrics and melody and then, if the song’s uptempo, we try and make every musical part really deliver so there is no ‘fat on the bone’! Also, I hope it has soul, not as a ‘soul’ record but sounds like I believe what I’m singing about and is done with conviction.

Your new single is out this week, tell us about ‘Set It Alight’

The song is about trying to get the girl but not being sure you are in her league and trying to persuade her to give it a go and ’Set It Alight’!!

In the video you stop at the kiss scene – did you get to kiss the girl?  We all want to know!

That is something none of us will know until we shoot the the video for the next single where all will be revealed!!

What’s next for Jack Robertson?

I’m currently finishing the album, getting the next single ready and preparing for my Autumn tour! We also have a number of one-off dates in Scotland that I love doing as the crowds and fans are so enthusiastic up here!
