Lucy-May speaks to PR Stable ahead of her new album release this week

Country-soul singer opens up about her new album to PR Stable ahead of its release this week

In a nutshell, tell us about Lucy-May?

I am a Singer/songwriter from London. I released my debut album ‘Whirlwind’ in 2015 having my first single ‘Paper Heart’ play listed at BBC Radio 2. I have been working hard on my second album which is due to be released Fri 3rd Nov. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!

You were in the same year as Amy Winehouse at school, what was that year like at the Brit School, would you say most of you had the ambition to be the best?

I loved The Brit School, it was literally like being in Fame. Students dancing on the tables at lunch time, guitarists jamming out in the corridors, lol! There was a lot of talented people at school some that have become known and some that haven’t. It’s such a tough industry to get in to and sometimes it’s not just about having the talent.

You received accolades from the great Terry Wogan, tell us about that?

Yes, Sir Terry Wogan was the first D.J to play my single ‘Paper Heart’. It was really incredible to hear him praising me live on national radio and I feel very blessed and honoured to be able to say that happened.

Your first album made quite a mark on the industry, can you tell us more about that?

Well I think when I first released my single ‘Paper Heart’ in Dec 2013 I was one of the few artists that were taking that country/pop route so everyone was all ears. As the time went on and I was in the studio finishing my album which took longer than expected due to money etc, more and more people had followed the same route and it was becoming more of a thing.

You spent time writing and recording in Nashville, is that where you found your country roots?

I had already got in to country music before ever going to Nashville. I loved Patsy Cline from a young age and always sang Crazy at pub/restaurant gigs. Then I got more in to Rascal Flats and other modern country artists. I loved writing and recording in Nashville, it’s an amazing place. The musicians were all incredible and laid their parts down in one take for some of the tracks on my first album.

Your look is very unique, combining a 60s look with a twist of modern, whilst you sound like a country/soul fusion.  How did that unusual cocktail come about?

My style has probably been influenced by Dusty Springfield as I loved her look. Being brought up on 60’s music has given me that soul sound I guess and with a later love for country once I started writing it was inevitable that this was my route and my style. My first album was rocky, lots of electric guitar so it was a fusion of country/pop/rock. With my new album I have definitely gone back to my routes a lot bringing that soul/Motown vibe and fusing it with a modern country pop.

The new album is called Little By Little, it’s a beautiful country/pop/soul fusion.  Tell us the story of the album.  How did the songs come about and what’s the overall theme of the album?

I really wanted to take my time with this album. I have been through a tough few years and I had a lot to write about. I just wrote and wrote and once I was ready to share what I had written and wanted to talk about it I picked up the phone to great friend/producer and writer Greg Fitzgerald (Co-writer for 2 songs from first album and producer of Paper Heart) and next thing I knew we were in the studio working on my second album.

We’ve seen that you’ve linked with Prostate Cancer UK, what sparked that union?

My dad was diagnosed earlier this year with Prostate Cancer and I have watched him going through treatment and the side effects he has had along the way. When my press girl Sam spoke to the charity about this, they were really keen to meet. We met and they loved the fact that I was a girl talking about it from my point of view. I was keen to help wherever I could to make this disease more aware. I am going to be taking the Prostate Cancer badge on the road for people to donate and there will be lots more events that I will be involved with moving forward.

You’re touring the UK in November, what can we expect from Lucy-May live?

Yes, I can’t wait. To finally be able to go out and sing my new songs to a crowd is really the icing on the cake. It’s nice to see how people react in the audience. It’s going to be a fun tour. I have 2 openers at each venue, who are all amazing! I have a full band line up for my set and there will be songs from my first album as well as lots from the new album. Hopefully something for everyone. I aim to give a party vibe and London is the last leg of the tour, finishing up in my home town was important to me. There will be lots of new merchandise for sale as well as both albums.
