SINKANE shares new single "Ya Sudan"Album 'Dépaysé' out May 31st on City SlangOFFICIAL PRESS RELEASENEWS PROVIDED BY Stereo Sanctity SINKANE Photo credit: Tiffany Smith SINKANE has shared a new single "Ya Sudan" with an accompanying animated lyric video, which was inspired by vintage Sudanese vinyl 7" artwork and features old childhood family photos. The third single from his forthcoming new album 'Dépaysé’ (due out May 31st via City Slang) and an homage to his country of origin/a celebration of his duality as a Sudanese-American. Following the recent fall of Sudanese president Omar El-Bashir's dictatorship, Sinkane's Ahmed Gallab comments: “I am so inspired with how the recent uprising in Sudan has unified Sudanese people all over the world. I feel like we are truly understanding our identity. It feels inclusive and welcoming. Sudan is one of the most diverse places on Earth. From the Nuba Mountains to Port Sudan. Dongola to Darfur. Kassala to Khartoum. We are people made up of different languages, cultures, and religions. Our differences create our beautiful and rich identity. As for me, growing up outside of Sudan has given depth to my identity. It has shown me a part of myself that I never knew existed. I think that this is relatable among all children of the diaspora. This is the message of “Ya Sudan”. "Being Sudanese is about being yourself unapologetically. Not letting anybody define who you are. This song is for the Kandakas who have been at the forefront of toppling Omar El-Bashir. And the strong men and children who stand beside them. And all of us outside of Sudan standing together showing the world our resilience. There is no better time than now to be Sudanese. “ Listen to "Ya Sudan" below: Sinkane's Ahmed Gallab is an artist with a real stake in our current cultural and political climate. Born in London to Sudanese parents, raised in Ohio, and now calling New York City home, he explains the sentiment behind ‘Dépaysé’ in a letter accompanying the new album (read in full): "Dépaysé is a French word that basically means “to be removed from one’s habitual surroundings.” By extension, it means to be disoriented, homeless. That's a feeling I relate to very much in these times — and I don’t think I’m the only one who feels this way. That word gave me clarity and made my journey of self discovery that much more exciting. “Sinkane is an American band comprised of people from all over the world,” he continues. “Our collective experience as children of the diaspora helped bring the music to life in the most honest way possible... “Dépaysé is the story of an immigrant’s journey of self-discovery in the Trump era. The music is loud and raw, and it's bursting with an energy unlike anything I’ve ever done before.” ‘Dépaysé’ is Sinkane’s seventh full-length and the follow-up to Sinkane's acclaimed 2017 album ‘Life & Livin' It’. The band features Gallab, Elenna Canlas (keys and vocals), Jonny Lam (guitar), Ish Montgomery (bass), and Chris St Hilaire (drums). ‘Dépaysé’ will be released on May 31st on City Slang.
