Taylor Swift has reached out to 5 Seconds of Summer after the group bagged a prize at the American Music Awards.

The Aussies won the New Artist of the Year gong at the ceremony in November.

It seems the win pleased US icon Swift, who has now told 5 Seconds of Summer's Michael Clifford on Twitter that she was rooting for them.

The pair started speaking to each other when guitarist Clifford recently tweeted about her song 'Shake It Off'.

Swift said "congrats" to the Australian (see below), with the musician then replying:

"Thank you. Your performance of blank space was sweet. I cried like this guy."
