Taylor Swift's '1989' becomes best-selling US album of 2014

‘1989’ by Taylor Swift has been confirmed as the biggest selling album in America for 2014.

Released in October, ‘1989’ has sold 3.66 million copies over the past nine weeks.

Swift’s “first documented official pop album” managed to fend off competition from Disney’s ‘Frozen’ soundtrack which came in at second place in the year end poll.

Nielsen SoundScan’s sales data shows that the Disney film soundtrack was the top seller for the first 51 weeks of the year but lost out to Swift in the final days of 2014 when she sold 326,000 units.

The ‘Frozen’ OST – which was released in 2013 – has now sold 3.53 million copies in the US to date.

The third best-selling album for the American market is Sam Smith’s ‘In The Lonely Hour’ with sales of 1.13 million and the fourth is Pentatonix’s ‘That’s Christmas To Me’ which shifted 1.02 million.

No other albums reached the million sales mark in the US in 2014.
