Taylor Swift apologises to Nicki Minaj: 'I misunderstood - I'm sorry'

'Style' sensation Taylor Swift has publicly apologised to Nicki Minaj after assuming a tweet was about her in regards to her nominations at this year's MTV VMAs.

Last night, rapper Nicki Minaj hit out at MTV for not including her as a nominee in the Video of the Year category and told her followers that "black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it".

After posting that tweet, the 'Starships' hitmaker shared the following message, which Swift interpreted as a personal dig: "Hey guys @MTV thank you for my nominations. Did 'Feeling Myself' miss the deadline or...? If I was a different "kind" of artist, 'Anaconda' would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well. Ellen did her own anaconda video and did the #choreo lol. Remember her doing that kick. Even mtv did a post on the choreo @MTV remember? If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year."

Taylor Swift responded to Minaj's Twitter rant and sent this message to her, which has been shared over 51,000 times on the social media site: "@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot... If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on."

After realising that Minaj's tweets weren't aimed towards her, Swift returned to Twitter this evening and wrote: "I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I'm sorry, Nicki. @NICKIMINAJ."
