Taylor Swift asks fan battling cancer to be her date to the ACM Awards

Country-pop's sweetheart, Taylor Swift, has publicly invited a fan to be her date to the upcoming Academy of Country Music Awards.

Kevin McGuire is an 18-year-old student from New Jersey who is battling cancer and an older family member of his set up a Facebook page campaigning to get the 'You Belong With Me' star to agree to accompany him to his high school prom.

A post on the touching Facebook page explains: "He fought the battle of his life.. undergoing years of chemo, digesting over 35 pills a night, hundreds of spinal taps, and numerous bone marrow screenings.. and ultimately won his battle with cancer on April 24, 2010."

"Tragically, Kevin had a relapse, and is now fighting cancer for the second time. Kevin is the kindest, most noble 18-year-old a person could even fathom meeting, and throughout his ups and downs Kevin never even questioned "why me?". Nothing, and I mean NOTHING brightens Kevin's day more than Taylor Swift."

Earlier this evening, February 24, Swift took to her own Facebook account and wrote:

"Kevin, I'm so sorry but I won't be able to make it to your prom. But I was wondering, the ACM Awards are coming up.. Would you be my date? Love, Taylor."
