Taylor Swift reveals 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' inspiration

Superstar Taylor Swift's latest single has gathered a lot of attention not just for being a fantastic break-up anthem, but also for the mystery behind why she wrote it.

Speaking backstage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night (September 22), she explained that bumping into a friend of an ex-boyfriend led to her penning the hit single although she is yet to reveal which past love it refers to:

"It's a song that just kind of happened. I was in the studio, and this guy who walked in was a friend of my ex's. And he made some comment about how he heard how I was gonna get back together with my ex."

She continued: "And after he left I was talking to Max [Martin] and Shellback [the song's co-writers and producers] and was like, 'we are never ever getting back together!' And after that happened I just grabbed my guitar."

Swift's new album, 'Red', will be released on October 22 and she admitted that working on the record was a challenge because she wanted to do something different to what she was known for without alienating her established fan base:

"You want to provide your fans with something exciting, but you don't want them to be listening to the album going, 'I don't recognize her.' So it's somewhere in the middle. You have to find a balance." Check out her brand new preview of 'Begin Again' from this morning's (September 24) Good Morning America here:
