Tulisa Contostavlos picks up award for mental health documentary

N-Dubz's Tulisa Contostavlos has been honoured with a special Mind Media Award for her documentary about working as a carer for her mentally ill mother.

The X Factor judge unveiled a film entitled 'Tulisa: My Mum and Me' earlier this year and it showed the struggles of growing up looking after an ill parent.

Contostavlos' mother suffers from schizoaffective disorder and the personal project gave viewers an incredibly honest insight into her life as a carer.

Last night, November 28, the talented singer and mentor was handed the Documentary Award at London's British Film Institute, and said of her win:

"Mental health issues are something that's very close to my heart. Winning a Mind Media Award means so much to me, I'm blown away. It's something that affects so many people and their families. I wanted My Mum and Me to show that no one should be ashamed to speak out about mental health issues."
