Following Deutsche Grammophon’s March release of Roger Eno and Brian Eno’s first ever joint album, Mixing Colours, the brothers launched a public collaboration project, A Quiet Scene, inviting fans to submit short films of our locked-down world, with the winning 18 to be issued as official music videos. Each day from 23 October until 11 November one of the winning entries will be released on YouTube and Vevo and published on the Mixing Colours site, where they will remain for the next year.

When announcing the project, the brothers encouraged participants to document and appreciate their own newly confined surroundings. “We want to ask people in the next few weeks to take a single shot of a quiet scene,” they explained, “at home, or out the window, or in their garden. Clouds passing, rustling tree leaves, a bird nesting, people conducting activities in the house: quiet moments that we are all enjoying, together, in isolation.” With lockdowns continuing across the globe, the videos have taken on an even greater sense of poignancy.

In total 1722 videos were submitted, with a 200-strong shortlist then being announced and shared on www.mixing-colours.com. Along with their own selection, Roger and Brian invited all 200 of the shortlisted entrants to vote on their favourite submissions. They are delighted to finally reveal the winning entries. “We were overwhelmed – both figuratively and actually – by the responses to our call for films. The quality was so high! And the number so large! It is really heartening to know that people are looking at the world around them in a curious and creative way,” said Roger and Brian.

“Fifteen years in the on-off making,” The Observer’s Kitty Empire wrote in a four-star review of Mixing Colours, “its slowly unspooling, generative beauty feels like a balm for these anxious times.” A follow-up EP of additional tracks entitled Luminous was released on vinyl in August. We are very pleased to announce the release of a 2CD edition of Mixing Colours Expanded, incorporating all 25 tracks from these sessions, which will also be available from today.
