Ed Sheeran says new song was originally meant for Rihanna

The one and only Ed Sheeran celebrated his return to music today by releasing two brand new tracks, but he revealed that one of them was originally meant for Rihanna

He told BBC Radio 1 earlier this morning (January 6) that 'Shape Of You' was never meant to be his own song:

"['Shape of You'] is actually a really random one because I went in to write songs for other people with a guy called Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid, and we were writing this song and I was like 'this would really work for Rihanna.'"

He went onto add that after certain lyrics were suggested, he knew that it was best to keep the cut for himself: "And then I started singing lyrics like 'putting Van The Man on the jukebox' and I was like 'well she's not really going to sing that, is she?' And then we sort of decided halfway through that we were just going to make it for me."
