Lorde meets baseball player who inspired 'Royals' lyrics

Lorde has met the person who inspired the lyrics behind her breakthrough track 'Royals'.

The singer shot to fame in 2013 as a result of the song's worldwide popularity.

The 17-year-old previously told VH1 that its lyrics are about former baseball player George Brett, saying:

"I had this image from the National Geographic of this dude just signing baseballs. He was a baseball player and his shirt said, 'Royals'."

Lorde performed in Las Vegas on Tuesday (April 15) as she got a chance to meet Brett in person, with the Major League Baseball Twitter account tweeting a photo of their meeting.

Brett later told TMZ: "Lorde is such a sweet little girl. She's only 17 years old and she's very talented...I actually downloaded her music off iTunes and listened to it on the plane ride to Vegas. I knew all the songs when she sang them.

"My wife and I met her after she did her soundcheck. And then we got to talk to her for a little bit after the concert also...We both said it was nice to meet each other."
