Rebecca Ferguson defends Mariah Carey after NYE performance criticism

Rebecca Ferguson has stepped forward to defend the legendary star Mariah Carey after she came under wide attack following her performance at Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve with Ryan Seacrest in New York City, due to failing to hear properly as the backing track continued to play.

The UK soul singer-songwriter, with four top ten albums under her belt, tweeted:

"I feel disappointed watching legends who have brought so much joy to our world after gifting their talent to us being ripped apart.

"And it seems it's only when they pass on that we fully understand how amazing they are.

"As humans I just think we could be kinder and why not celebrate our legends?"

Speaking to Billboard, Carey's publicist Nicole Perna said sound problems were not fixed before she went on stage. The PR said:

"She was not 'winging' this moment and took it very seriously. A shame that production set her up to fail.

"They told her it would be fine once she was on stage. However, that was not the case and they were again told that her ear piece was not working. Instead of endeavouring to fix the issue so that Mariah could perform, they went live. Any allegations that she planned to lip sync are just adding insult to injury."
