Paul Simon scores first Number 1 album in 25 years

Paul Simon has topped this week’s Official Albums Chart with his greatest hits album 'The Ultimate Collection'.

The retrospective, which coincides with his UK tour dates with Sting, marks Simon’s first No.1 album in 25 years, after 1990’s 'The Rhythm Of The Saints'.

Meanwhile, James Bay’s 'Chaos And The Calm' holds at No.2, Ed Sheeran’s 'X' is at 3, and Sam Smith’s 'In The Lonely' is at No.4 for its 47th week on the tally.

Rounding off the Top 5 is a new entry from The Wombats. The band’s third studio album Glitterbug is their second to enter the Top 10 following 2011’s This Modern Glitch.

US rockers Halestorm score their first UK Top 40 album with 'Into The Wild Life', landing at No.10, and American star Shawn Mendes enters at 12 with his debut album 'Handwritten'.

Tyler, The Creator’s fourth album 'Cherry Bomb' is new at No.16, X Factor winner Shayne Ward debuts at 17 with 'Closer', and Stornoway’s 'Bonxie' enters at No.20.

Further down the chart, Irish folk band Villagers land at 27 with their third album 'Darling Arithmetic', LA singer-songwriter Beth Hart enters at No.33 with Better Than Home, and Lulu’s first studio album in 10 years 'Making Life Rhyme' debuts at No.35.

This week’s final new entries in the Top 40 come from Calexico’s 'Edge Of The Sun' (No.37) and Eels’ 'Royal Albert Hall' (No.40).
