ARTO LINDSAY COMPILATION 'ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ARTO' - TO BE RELEASED ON 2nd JUNE '14

Songwriter/producer/singer/guitarist Arto Lindsay (no 72 in Spin’s 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time in 2012) will release a double CD retrospective of his solo work called ‘Encyclopedia Of Arto’ on 2nd June ’14 on the Ponderosa Music & Art label.

Born in the US and raised in Brazil, Arto Lindsay has always absorbed the music that has surrounded him and created a unique synthesis between experimental music, world music, and pop. His music can go from gentle Jonathan Richman-esque naïve pop through the rhythms of Tropicalismo, Samba and BossaNova to full-on ‘horrible noise’ (as Lester Bangs once noted appreciatively).

His first group, DNA, a thrilling exercise in ear-shredding anti-pop, had a profound influence on the experimental music scene, helping bring about the No Wave movement, whose essence was captured by producer Brian Eno on the seminal Ze Records “No New York” compilation in 1978. As a member of the Lounge Lizards, he collaborated with John and Evan Lurie to create intensely subversive pop music/avant-garde jazz. As bandleader for the Ambitious Lovers, he developed a new hybrid of American and Brazilian music. Throughout his career, Lindsay has collaborated with both visual and musical artists, including Brian Eno, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Animal Collective, Marc Ribot, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. He has also made his mark as a producer, notably on Brazilian superstar Caetano Veloso’s landmark album ‘Estrangeiro’ and on Brazilian pop singer Marisa Monte’s album ‘Memorias, Cronicas e Declaracoes de Amor’, which earned him a Latin Grammy Award in 2002.

CD 1 of Encyclopedia of Arto features the tracks that Lindsay has chosen from his solo albums between 1996 and 2004 - “O Corpo Sutil”, “Mundo Civilizado”, “Noon Chill”, “Prize”, “Invoke” and “Salt”, songs that he wrote with exceptional fellow travellers like Amedeo Pace (Blonde Redhead), Marisa Monte, Caetano Veloso, Kassin, Vinicius Cantuaria, as well as the faithful Andrés Levin and Melvin Gibbs.

CD 2 comprises a solo performance by Arto, recorded live at Berghain and HBC in Berlin and Pete’s Candy Store in Brooklyn, and features just voice and guitar, a naked, abrasive sound where the vocal melodies and the atonal guitar playing manage to epitomize all of his “musical poetics”. In addition to previously unreleased songs including Arto’s “Pony” and compelling versions of Chico Buarque’s ‘Estaçao Derradeira’ and the samba classics ‘Maneiras’ and ‘O Mais Belo Dos Belos’, there are songs from his solo albums and startling covers of Prince’s ‘Erotic City’ and Al Green’s ‘Simply Beautiful’, which completely transform the studio versions on his 1996 album “Mundo Civilizado”.
