5 Seconds of Summer: "We didn't realise we were a boyband until people started calling us that"

5 Seconds of Summer have admitted that they have never called themselves a boyband.

The Australian quartet are often compared to the likes of tour buddies One Direction, but they aren't always too keen on that label.

The group play their own instruments and cite the likes of punk rockers Green Day as influences.

Speaking to USA Today, Ashton Irwin said that the band didn't actually consider themselves a boyband until people started throwing that term around.

He said: "We didn't really realise we were a boy band until people started calling us a boy band.

"I understand and we don't care what people call us, as long as we're making the music we love."

5 Seconds of Summer meanwhile are due to support One Direction on their Where We Are stadium tour in Europe and North America this summer.
