Conchita Wurst: 'Europe showed that we are a community of respect and tolerance'

Austria had a runaway win with their drag act contestant Conchita Wurst at the Eurovision Song Contest last night (May 10).

The 59th Annual Eurovision Song Contest was held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Conchita Wurst – real name Tom Neuwirth – had a landslide win with 290 points and was confirmed as the winner after 34 of the 37 countries had made their scores known.

‘Rise Like A Phoenix’ gives Austria its first win since 1966.

Whilst collecting the Eurovision trophy onstage, the ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’ singer stated:

“This night is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom. You know who you are - we are unity and we are unstoppable.”

Speaking after the show about Europe’s support, Conchita said: “I dream of a world where we don't have to talk about unnecessary things like sexuality, who you love. I felt like tonight Europe showed that we are a community of respect and tolerance.”

The UK’s entrant, Molly Smitten-Downes, finished in 17th place with the song ‘Children Of The Universe’ being given a total of 40 points from San Marino, Denmark, Malta, Iceland, Norway, Ireland, Spain, Belgium and Georgia.
