Bella Thorne on playing a mean girl in 'The DUFF': 'It was hard'

Actress Bella Thorne stars in the upcoming new movie 'The DUFF' and has opened up about what it's like to play a mean girl in a new interview with Grazia magazine

The term DUFF means 'designated ugly fat friend' and Thorne explained that her character in the film is the only one who isn't funny so it was quite challenging because she loves to make people smile and laugh:

"It was definitely interesting. It's hard because I love making people laugh and that's what I want to do every day, I love making people smile. Being the only character in the film that doesn't do that and isn't funny, was a little tough. Especially when you're with Mae and Robbie who are making jokes 24/7 and are so funny and getting all the laughs, it's like 'aww I want to be funny, why am I so mean in this film, can't we have anything likeable about my character please?'"

Thorne was also asked how she's dealing with the negative connotations of the movie's title and added that she hopes people learn a lesson from it: "Everybody says this, don't get your knickers in a twist. This is high school, high school is mean, news flash. If we dumbed down high school to fit for the big screen it wouldn't been realistic. Everyone wants to turn their eye to the bullying and everything that goes on nowadays in school and that's just not acceptable because it is what it is. It happens."

"The DUFF - everybody is a DUFF. I'm a DUFF, you're a DUFF, we all have a DUFF. They honestly are just a few letters thrown together that make that word. There is always going to be someone richer than you, always someone smarter than you, more athletic than you, more beautiful than you. That's the way the world works."
