Robin Thicke, Avicii and Lorde have most tagged Shazam songs of the year

Songs by the likes of Robin Thicke and Avicii were among the most tagged songs of the year on Shazam.

The application allows users to place their phone near to audio in the hope of its database recognising the tune and revealing its identity.

Shazam have confirmed that Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' was the most requested song, with a total of 17.8 million 'tags' worldwide in 2013. It was identified 5.6 million times in the US.

Avicii's smash hit 'Wake Me Up' is the second most popular song with 14.7 million global tags whilst Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' 'Thrift Shop' is third with 13.6 million tags.

Lorde's 'Royals' meanwhile was America's second most requested song with a total of 5.1 million tags.

Shazam's end of year report also took time to predict who they think will make it big in 2014.

They cited the likes of Sam Smith, Action Bronson, Banks and Lucy Hale as stars of the future.
