After over 700 million career streams to date, rising alterna-pop icon Maggie Lindemann takes a refreshingly new personal approach with her new track ‘Human’.

Maggie’s gift for elegantly crafted modernist pop remains in check, as does her ability to write melodic hooks which immediately embed themselves in the memory. But as the chorus sinks in (“I wish I was human, I wish that I could see shit like you do, where it’s sunny all the time but it’s useless, and if you saw through my eyes you’d understand why”), it’s clear that she’s exploring her personal challenges with mental health struggles.

“The song is about literally not feeling human,” says Maggie. “Doing too many drugs or drinking too much to take a feeling away turns you into someone who’s not yourself, not going out because you’ve secluded yourself from the world. I think everyone can take away a different feeling from the song but for me it was always about having anxiety. Not feeling human enough to go out, but if I did go out I was getting messed up to take these voices away, my insecurities and my anxiety telling me shit about myself. Feeling alone and like nobody really gets it unless they could see through my eyes. The things we struggle with can make us feel less human sometimes and I want people to know that I’m there with them and I feel you, but we’ll be okay.”

The song’s dark-hued vibe was inspired by the character of Lydia from Beetlejuice, a human with the ability to see dead people. Maggie plays on the similarities between the character and her own experiences – they both have a different outlook on life which isn’t immediately apparent to anyone else.

Directed by Kajal, the accompanying video possesses a spooky, sultry vibe with haunted house and body horror themes.

“I’m absolutely obsessed with this video, it’s definitely my favourite one yet,” adds Maggie. “As I enter the house I’m turning into this underworld queen / undead dead type thing. There are all these contortionists around me that are all spooky which is so sick, it gives it more of a scary vibe which is what I was really shooting for. I wanted it to be more scary / spooky then like a younger Halloween vibe.”

Maggie made a huge breakthrough with ‘Pretty Girl’ which became one of the world’s biggest selling singles of 2017. Maggie’s appeal has a global reach, and also has Platinum and Gold records not only in her home country of the United States, but also in key territories including and Australia, Germany and Norway. Maggie has been tipped by Vogue, People, NYLON, Cosmopolitan and others, and her immense popularity is underlined with 3.1 million followers at Instagram.
