A Permanent Shadow, the musical collective led by Barcelona-resident CP Fletcher, are about to release their new single. “This Energy” in its original seven-minute version will appear on the band’s next album, and a remix will be released on January 7th which was commissioned to It’s OK DJ. Whereas the original version blends seventies disco with nineties rock, the remix is a bold trip to the eighties applying modern production values, reminiscent of Cold Cave, Hurts or White Lies.

Lyrically, “This Energy” is a big “Thank you” to singer CP Fletcher’s soulmate for putting up with him for years. At the same time the song is a rumination on how modern society has lost touch with nature and human interaction. Granted, COVID did certainly not help matters, however, the pandemic only helped accelerate a trend of online vs. face-to-face which in turn foments a style-over-substance approach to life. While we let others see us at our happiest, busiest and most successful on social media, no one knows or even cares how we feel on the inside.

“This Energy” was produced by Valentí Nieto who also plays guitar, bass and synthesizer, while Albert Català (keyboards, piano, synthesizer) was involved in arrangements and preproduction. The dance remix as usual comes with a stunning video directed by Motorzombis singer Dani Moreno. The star of the clip is dancer Alba Jordan who interprets various characters throughout the street-dance performance.

A Permanent Shadow’s debut album was released in September 2019 to critical acclaim on the band’s own APE Music imprint. A particular highlight for Fletcher was a nod from Simple Minds on their social media accounts in which they praised APS’s cover of their own song “See The Light”.

A new album by A Permanent Shadow is scheduled for release in early 2022. “This Energy” will be made available on digital platforms on January 7th 2022.
