The Ivor Novello Awards nominations announced for 2018

BASCA, in association with PRS for Music, today [24 April] announce the songwriters and composers nominated for the 63rd Ivor Novello Awards [The Ivors].

The Ivors celebrate, honour and reward excellence in British and Irish songwriting and composing. Presented and judged by music creators they represent the pinnacle of musical achievement and peer recognition.

Works eligible for this year’s awards were commercially released in the UK in 2017 and have a British or Irish songwriting or composing contribution of at least one third.

Best Song Musically and Lyrically recognises excellence in songwriting craft, whilst Best Contemporary Song recognises outstanding originality in songwriting. PRS for Music Most Performed Work is compiled and title sponsored by The Ivors sponsor and credits works that received the most broadcast, online and general performance in the UK during 2017. The Album Award recognises exceptional songwriting and consistency across an album as a whole.

Best Original Film Score and Best Television Soundtrack recognise outstanding original composition for a feature film and television programme respectively. This year BASCA revived Best Original Video Game Score which recognises outstanding composition for a video game. It has been bought back to celebrate the talent working in a major sector of British composing. The quantity and quality of UK based composers working in games is in rude health and BASCA wanted to recognise such a strong area of the industry accordingly.

“BASCA's nominations for the 2018 Ivor Novello Awards are, as ever, a mirror of the eclectic and inspirational reach of current UK music. The Ivors purpose is to recognise and celebrate excellence in British and Irish music writing across Song, Album, Television, Film and this year, Video Games.  As the only peer nominated music award ceremony in the country, The Ivors are inherently about musical merit and communication more than promotion and we’re especially excited to be able to honour some of the phenomenal talents of the contemporary British music writing scene. Talent admired the world over. Our congratulations go out to everyone nominated today, it’s fully deserved.” - Crispin Hunt, BASCA Chair
