Springwatch, will be back on screens from 29 May, and this time they’ll be coming from a brand new location, as Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan will be presenting seasonal wonders from RSPB Arne in Dorset.

This season’s site remains one of the few places in the UK where all six of the UK’s native reptiles can be found, including the rare Sand Lizards and Smooth Snakes.

Iolo Willams will be exploring the neighbouring Purbeck Heaths, dubbed the UK’s first ‘super’ National Nature Reserve. The area has 11 priority habitats that allow all of its inhabitants, including heathlands birds, Britain’s rarest dragonfly, and 12 bat species, to move around more freely and adapt to the changing climate and environment. This extraordinary and thriving nature reserve is the results of a collaboration of seven wildlife partners looking after the large area together.

Elsewhere, Gillian Burke will report from her road-trip across North Wales, where she explores the region’s natural beauty from Snowdonia, across the Menai Straits to Anglesey. She’ll see how the nature and species have reclaimed a post-industrial landscape in Gwaith Powdwr Nature Reserve, and elsewhere she’ll uncover the secrets of changing seasons of our seas.

As always, viewers can look forward to live cameras capturing the wildlife in real-time, and including a new array of nest cameras too. The RSPB’s Arne site itself features up to 30 remote cameras, each hoping to capture the drama and joy of the wildlife awakening to spring, giving viewers the chance to observe many different species from Green Woodpeckers and Dartford Warblers, to tunnelling bees.

The programme will also feature a number of stories spanning across the UK and the natural world, including mammals, invertebrates, amphibians, fish, reptiles and birds. Along with our animal friends, the Springwatch team will also showcase the work and dedication of the people working together to help the environment and wildlife across the UK.

And to top it off, the audiences’ favourite Mindfulness Moments will also be back, with 90-second films of pure, uninterrupted nature, featuring the world of the red squirrels, tranquil carpets of English bluebells and the UK’s only aquatic songbird - the dipper.

Rosemary Edwards, Executive Producer of Springwatch says: “We are excited to bring this year’s Springwatch live from RSPB Arne, at the heart of Purbeck Heaths, home to an astonishing array of wildlife, from birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects and more. We hope that audiences will have a chance to learn something new about their favourite species, or even discover new ones. We hope that this year’s programmes will inspire more people to explore the beautiful and diverse nature we have in the UK, and encourage them to learn how they can make a difference too”.

Senior Head of Commissioning for BBC Factual, Jack Bootle comments: “I am delighted that Springwatch will be showcasing a new location this series. I look forward to this time of year when the cameras capture the spectacular scenes from the awakening wildlife - from dens, nests, meadows and woodlands from across the UK. We are happy to yet again have the chance to bring the extraordinary, colourful and unpredictable spring world to viewers living rooms, and I hope that Springwatch’s loyal fans enjoy the new series.”

Springwatch returns to BBC Two on Monday 29 May at 7.30 pm and will continue from Tuesday 30 May at 8pm. You can also watch on BBC iPlayer.

Springwatch is produced by BBC Studios in partnership with The Open University and was commissioned for the BBC by Jack Bootle, Head of Commissioning, Science and Natural History. The Executive Producer is Rosemary Edwards for BBC Studios, Series Editor is Joanna Brame.
