BBC Radio 1 has announced plans to open up the airwaves to young people around the country, offering them the opportunity to share what makes them who they are.

From 14-20 November 2020, BBC Radio 1’s Minute Of Me will be handing over to young people across the UK, giving them up to a minute each to broadcast to millions on the UK’s biggest youth radio station. The station has put a call out for anyone with a story to tell, from those who feel they struggle to be heard or seen by those around them, to those who feel they deserve to be celebrated and want the world to celebrate with them.

Whether it’s sharing personal mottos to live by, showcasing unique talents or simply telling tales of their own experiences, Radio 1 will be offering them the chance to share what it is that makes them who they are. It could be that listeners want to share a piece of advice that had an impact on them, or it could be that they you want to make everyone smile, or laugh, or think; each will have the freedom to talk about what it is that defines them as the nation listens.

Listeners can apply to take part now via the Radio 1 website.

Greg James, host of Radio 1 Breakfast, says: "During the pandemic it feels like we’ve got closer to our listeners than ever. They’ve helped us through the bleak times just as much as we’ve helped them. We’re not afraid to reflect real life on Radio 1, and as well as offering an escape from the sometimes harsh realities of life, we also need to use our platform to make sure as many people as possible are given an opportunity to be heard."

Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, says: "Many young people have struggled to find a voice in what has been an incredibly challenging year for us all, so we’re giving them a chance to do exactly that and tell us what they would say if they were given a national platform. We want people to hear directly from the next generation and listen to what’s important to them, and I’m pleased Radio 1 is able to help share their stories."
