Kenny Allstar has been named as the host of the new Radio 1 Rap Show, bringing a fresh take to the legendary show, which is simulcast on Radio 1 and 1Xtra and broadcast in the prestigious Saturday night slot at 9pm. The show is famous for showcasing the biggest names in Rap and Hip-Hop from across the pond, across the globe and across the UK.

Kenny Allstar is a true ‘tastemaker’ on the UK music scene and holds an undeniable reputation for spotting the next ‘big thing’. He is well-known for his DJing, production and broadcasting skills and is considered one of the biggest champions for UK Rap and Hip-Hop.

Through the Friday Night Rap Show on BBC 1Xtra and numerous freestyle series, including Voice of the Streets, The Generals Corner and Mad About Bars, a large part of Kenny’s career has been defined by his relentless drive to find, support and showcase new and emerging rappers. Kenny now wants to continue this on a “global scale” and spotlight the best in Rap and Hip-Hop from around the world.

Kenny was DJ’ing at parties from 14 years old and honed his radio skills through various residencies at community radio stations before joining the BBC in 2018. He also owns and runs a studio hub in East London which has become a melting pot for artists from different areas and regions to come together and record their music.

The show is currently called 1Xtra’s Rap Show and host Tiffany Calver will be stepping down after four years.

Kenny Allstar says: “From the age of 11, I remember taking my mother’s cassette tapes to record The Rap Show on Saturdays. This was more than a radio show it was my entire social life. I always wanted to one day be the host of this powerful slot on these powerful networks. I hope to uphold the legacy that Tiffany left in place and continue to showcase the hottest in Hip Hop music on a global scale.”

Aled Haydn Jones, Head of BBC Radio 1, says: “I am so excited to welcome Kenny Allstar to the BBC Radio 1 family. He is a true tastemaker in the industry who brings that first-in-class authenticity and credibility that this iconic show is known for. He is a true force to be reckoned with and I can’t wait to see him continue the legacy and put his own personal stamp on The Rap Show.”

“Tiffany leaves an incredible legacy and will be missed at the station. A truly talented DJ and broadcaster, I’m excited to see what her next chapter brings”.

Details on the start date for Kenny, and 1Xtra’s new Friday night schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
