On this morning’s Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on Radio 2, Joe Wicks, the nation’s favourite virtual PE teacher, announced that he will be attempting to work out for an incredible 24 hours for Radio 2’s BBC Children in Need Challenge 2020.

The Joe Wicks 24 Hour PE Challenge will see Joe start his work-out at 9.25am on Thursday 12 November, endeavouring to finish a day later at 9.25am on Friday 13 November.

Joe, also known as The Body Coach, will be doing a range of activities from cycling to yoga, boxing to rowing... and of course his signature HIIT workouts. He’ll also be joined via Zoom by a host of celebrity guests - including Radio 2 presenters - throughout the 24 hours to give him loads of encouragement in his challenge to help raise funds for BBC Children in Need.

Joe, whose mission is to get the world fitter, stronger, healthier and happier, will be working out live on BBC Radio 2 from the BBC Studios in London and viewers can watch his efforts live on the Red Button and BBC iPlayer across the 24 hours. The final moments of Joe’s challenge on the morning of the BBC Children in Need Appeal day, from 9.05am-9.25am, will stream live on YouTube with schools up and down the country joining it to cheer him on.

Viewers will also be able to send messages of support for Joe, which will scroll across the screen. Audiences will be able to donate to support Joe via text donation and through www.bbc.co.uk/radio2. Money raised will go towards supporting children and young people across the UK facing a range of disadvantages.

And on Radio 2 (Saturday 24 October) and BBC Sounds for the following 30 days in Joe Wicks’ BBC Children in Need Workout Playlist, Joe takes control of the airwaves to bring listeners an hour of tunes designed to get them moving!

Joe was recently awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his home workouts during lockdown, ensuring kids (and parents) kept fit this year.

Joe Wicks says: “2020 has been a challenging year for us all, so what better way to end it than by raising money for BBC Children in Need, a charity very close to my heart.

"Please show your support by donating whatever you can to this brilliant charity, and get involved by tuning in to work out with me and post your pictures on social media.”

Helen Thomas, Head of BBC Radio 2, says: “Joe’s efforts to keep the nation fit this year have been awe-inspiring, so we were thrilled when he accepted our challenge to work out for 24 hours to raise funds for BBC Children in Need.”

Simon Antrobus, BBC Children in Need Chief Executive, says: “We know that the last six months have had a real impact on children and young people’s wellbeing, which is why the money raised by Joe and Radio 2 through this remarkable challenge will go on to help deliver crucial support to children and young people at a time when it is so urgently needed.

"We are so grateful to Joe for taking on this challenge. It’s acts of kindness like this that help to make a difference to young lives, and we look forward to tuning in and cheering him on.”

Joe’s challenge follows in the footsteps of Rylan Clark-Neal, who last year took part in the 24-hour The Great Ka-RY-oke Challenge, helping Radio 2 raise over £2m for BBC Children in Need, and is the latest addition to the mammoth charity fundraising challenges hosted by Radio 2. In 2018 Radio 2’s Good Morning Sunday presenters Rev. Kate Bottley and Jason Mohammad took on a swimming challenge in the cold waters of Salford Quays in aid of BBC Children in Need.

In addition to his Radio 2 challenge, Joe Wicks will be returning for the charity’s 2020 Appeal as the Schools Ambassador. Last year’s campaign, led by Joe, is estimated to have reached 3m children in 17,000 schools throughout the UK.
