As a Ukrainian interpreter, Aliia (aged 31) does everything the recruits do from running in the pouring rain to cleaning weapons and sitting in an ambush. For Aliia, acting as a bridge between the British instructors and the new soldiers is much more than a job: for her, it's a duty towards her fellow Ukrainians who're risking their lives to protect hers.

Having not left the military camp for six months to avoid feelings of guilt while the recruits she has helped train head for the frontline, Aliia battles with the reality of accepting that many of the men she meets, befriends and cares for will sadly not return to their families.

Aliia says, "They know they might not be back and they're ready for that, they're ready to die."

Aliia adds, "I don't want to get any more bad news because it's going to kill me. I've lost some good friends who've been fighting on the frontline and it's devastating. It's terrible, it's like such an emptiness inside. I genuinely love the recruits and I genuinely care about them but at this point of time, I don't want to know any news, because I won't be able to work."

About

Stacey Dooley will follow a group of Ukrainian civilians as they arrive in the UK to begin five weeks of intensive army training. With exclusive and unprecedented access to the British Army’s training mission, the recruits will learn to survive and to be lethal, as they prepare for deployment to the frontline fighting against Russia.

Among the young civilians putting their lives on the line, Stacey meets florist and gardener Mykola, who wants to join his family members already on the frontline. He tells Stacey he hopes for victory so that he can marry his girlfriend. For Pasha, a welder who was living abroad when the invasion began, he fears going into battle will mean never seeing his parents again.

Stacey Dooley: Ready For War? airs on BBC Three on Wednesday 12 April at 9pm and will be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am the same day.
