Grime Kids - Meet Junior

What can you tell us about the group of Grime Kids?

It’s a story of five boys that are trying to do something a little bit different. I think they see a lot of their peers and people around them doing different things. They’re trying to do big things and be something different.

I felt so lucky with this as we all got on so well, so it made working with each other a joy. We were lucky to have Abdou and Ian (our directors – Abdou did the first three and Ian did episodes four and five) from the very start and we’ve known them now for quite a while so it’s been really incredible to work with them.

Why do you think people should watch Grime Kids?

I think Grime Kids is important as it shows people, say my age, what it was like at the time (set in 2001) and to see the early movements of grime, especially seeing how it’s globally taken off now. You don’t need to know grime to enjoy this show, but hopefully the people that grew up in that community can see themselves throughout the show and relate. It only really touches the surface too.

What can you tell us about your character, Junior?

Junior is super loyal to his friends, he’s optimistic and troubled too. The people who he’s with and he really likes, for example Dane in the show, he has their back whatever happens. He’s complicit and I think he’s with the group – he’s not necessarily the person who’s like ‘let’s go’ but I feel like when it comes to deciding who’s going to be the one who’s like ‘come on guys let’s actually just do this’ – I feel like that’s Junior.

Who do you think has the best wardrobe in the show?

I do think I have the best wardrobe. I think I’ve got the best casual wardrobe, like some nice tracksuits. For some reason when my character wants to go out to house parties or events, I think he’s a bit reckless with what he wears.

What was your favourite location while filming?

My favourite location was when we shot Mic of the Manor at Hoxton Hall. I’d seen a couple of photos and clips from that and I loved how it looked. Also one of the big tower blocks we worked on was cool too as you could see all of London from the roof.

About

Grime Kids is a coming of age drama, set in 2001 in Bow, East London The show follows a fictional group of school leavers across what they believe to be, their “last summer as kids”. We follow Dane, Junior, Kai, Bishop and Bayo, as they navigate first loves, fracturing home lives, financial pressures, brushes with danger, and the ever present question: what kind of man do you want to be? All the while pursuing (with various levels of enthusiasm) a very new, and maybe not so justified dream to make it big in the garage music scene.

Grime Kids will air on BBC Three on Monday 13 November at 10pm with all episodes available as a five-part box set on BBC iPlayer.
