While physically thousands of miles apart, the partnership between Greek pop artist KID MOXIE and German pop artist NINA came organically. Upon connecting, it was instantly clear the two were “synth sisters” destined to make music together. The result is a 5-track EP collection titled Lust set for release on March 24 via Italians Do It Better. The title track “Lust” is out today (2/10) alongside an edgy and seductive neo-noir music visual shot in Athens by director Paige Von Bank.

The Lust project first began as a desire by KID MOXIE, the musical moniker of Greek born, LA-based composer and musician Elena Charbila, to recreate the Jennifer Lopez hit “Waiting For Tonight.” After connecting with synthwave doyenne NINA (Nina Boldt) via Zoom, the idea emerged that a sultry female duet is exactly what this track needed. The notion of a duet-driven project was very appealing to both artists who’ve firmly established themselves with successful solo releases, and notable past collaborations. It was clear both pop/synth songstresses shared a similar headspace and bonded over their affection towards dark cinematic scores such as Blade Runner, Twin Peaks, and Drive.

KID MOXIE & NINA’s debut track “Waiting For Tonight” was featured on Italians Do It Better’s After Dark Vol. 4 compilation (August 2022) and based upon the response the acclaimed label signed on for a larger collection of tracks.

Initially conceptualized during some of the darkest days of COVID with lockdowns still in-place, much of the album was a digital and international collaborative experience. KID MOXIE spent several months composing and programming the tracks in Athens with producer Hristos Lainas aka Franklin. After most of the music was solidified, she and NINA would remotely bounce vocal ideas and lyrics back and forth. Finally, the two came together and finished and recorded the lyrics and vocals together at Kung Fu Studios in Berlin during two back-to-back 12-hour-days in the studio. Multi-instrumentalist Radio Wolf contributed his guitar magic to “Electric Kiss” and “Waiting For Tonight,” while Skylar Funk added his Blade Runner-like sax flair to “Crime.”

“Lust is an album that encapsulates themes that I find eternally exciting like desire, old Hollywood, and night drives,” KID MOXIE shares of the project. “I’ve never had a partner in crime before and NINA, from the beginning, felt like the perfect match to explore this neon noir universe with.”

NINA goes on to say, “Lust was a compelling project for me because I had never experimented with themes of erotica before. Collaborating with Kid Moxie was lots of fun and I think this album’s sound is dark yet playful. We don’t take ourselves too seriously while still maintaining a mysterious edge.”

About

About Kid Moxie:
Kid Moxie is the musical moniker of Greek born, LA-based composer and musician, Elena Charbila. A blend of powerful beats, noir pop melodies, and haunting widescreen soundscapes make Kid Moxie’s music both ethereal and engrossing and define the genre that has been described as “cinematic pop.” Her musical collaborations are diverse and unexpected, from indie upstarts like Gaslamp Killer to the legendary composer Angelo Badalamenti, with whom she created a new version of “Mysteries of Love,” originally recorded with David Lynch and Julee Cruise on the classic Blue Velvet soundtrack.

Her most recent album, 2022’s Better Than Electric garnered a number of critical nods with LA Weekly calling it “retro-futuristic goodness” and American Songwriter saying, “KM mixes synths, lust and love,” while CNN dubbed her a female composer worthy of Oscar attention.

Kid Moxie is also the composer behind the recently rebranded Orion/MGM Pictures logo and she’s currently scoring the TV show Milky Way directed by Cannes award winning director Vassilis Kekatos. In addition to her own personal albums, she contributed several tracks to video game sensation “Cyberpunk 2077,” and released a soundtrack via Lakeshore Entertainment for the movie Not To Be Unpleasant But We Need to Have A Serious Talk. Kid Moxie’s tracks have received substantial international airplay, been featured on hit TV shows, indie films and in international brand campaigns. Her tracks have premiered on Entertainment Weekly, Vogue, Stereogum, Noisey and many more influential publications and websites.

About NINA:
NINA aka Nina Boldt has released two LPs, various EPs, toured worldwide and collaborated with various artists such as Erasure, Kim Wilde, Ricky Wilde, Richard X, Oscillian, and Radio Wolf. Her debut album Sleepwalking was praised by critics and embraced significantly by ‘Synthwave’ and ‘Retrowave’ aficionados, earning her the affectionate nickname “The Queen Of Synthwave.” Bristol Pride honoured her with the Best Act award in 2015.

Her hit single “My Mistake” was used for the Mercedes Benz TV advert across Europe and was also featured by Hugo Boss and Adidas, gaining her a spot in the Shazam Charts at #6. In 2019, she was featured and interviewed in the synthwave documentary The Rise Of The Synths, narrated by legendary film director and composer John Carpenter.

Shortly after, NINA recorded “I’ll Wait,” a song created specially for the Horror film There's No Such Thing As Vampires, directed by Logan Thomas (who also wrote the song). This single leads the soundtrack, which features various illustrious synthwave artists. She later re-recorded the song in a fiery new production by frequent collaborator Radio Wolf. This version of the song became the director’s personal favourite.

In 2020, her second album Synthian jumped to #1 on the Electronic Album Charts on iTunes in Canada. Synthian (The Remixes) featured pop singer Kim Wilde as a guest vocalist for a unique rock interpretation of NINA’s song “The Wire.”

Her follow-up album Control features samples from the Cliff Martinez Drive film score (released by Lakeshore Records).

In 2021, her musical and lyrical imagination led her into bold new sonic territory with her first single release as an independent artist, “Carnival Night.” Wonderland Magazine called the song “masterful.” The single was produced by Radio Wolf, who is currently in the studio with NINA, as they work on new music.

NINA is also working on an album with 80s songwriting veteran Ricky Wilde, who wrote hit singles such as “Kids In America,” for his sister Kim Wilde. NINA’s achievements were recently celebrated in Retro Pop Magazine, in which they described the artist’s music as “stellar.”

In the summer of 2022, Chromatics and Glass Candy record producer Johnny Jewel released (through his label Italians Do It Better) a dark cover version of the J-Lo hit single “Waiting For Tonight,” performed by Kid Moxie and NINA.
