Today, Ghetto Gastro announced the global release of their first-ever book, Black Power Kitchen (Artisan Books; Hardcover / 304 pages /150 color photographs), on October 18, 2022. A celebration of Black culture, the book is also a cookbook, a manifesto, and a strikingly beautiful work of art that will spark conversation about inclusion, race, access, and how food—and knowing how to cook—provide a path to freedom and self-empowerment.

The release of Black Power Kitchen is timed to the 10th anniversary of Ghetto Gastro, the Bronx-born culinary collective from Jon Gray, Pierre Serrao, and Lester Walker. Ghetto Gastro sits at the intersection of food, music, fashion, visual arts, and social activism. Now they bring their multidisciplinary approach to disrupting and reinventing what a cookbook can offer. Written with James Beard Award-winning writer Osayi Endolyn, Black Power Kitchen arms readers with 75 mostly plant-based recipes, immersive storytelling, diverse voices, and striking images and photographs that inspire larger conversations about race, history, and food inequality.

This past year, Ghetto Gastro has found mainstream success across genres. The collective released a custom line of kitchen appliances, CRUXGG, across Target stores nationwide, and a cookware line of the same name in Williams Sonoma. They also launched their namesake consumer goods brand of pantry items inspired by ancestral ingredients. In February, Ghetto Gastro partnered with Wolfgang Puck for the iconic Oscars Governors Ball, the first time in 26 years that Puck brought on a collaborator. They have since produced culinary experiences for Coachella, Spotify, BottleRock Napa, Diageo, Audemars Piguet, and more.

Black Power Kitchen is available for preorder now wherever books are sold. The book’s cover and interiors were designed by New Studio, and features work by Nayquan Shuler and Joshua Woods.
