Singer-songwriter Kai Nanfelt released his song, Sober, on December 11, 2020. The
track tackles difficult topics such as mental health, substance abuse and suicide. The Boston University graduate only recently found the time to prioritize his music career following the loss of his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the outbreak, the Rhode Islander conducted public relations for Boston Calling, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Outside Lands Music Festivals, in addition to other jobs in the music industry.

Nanfelt wrote Sober for his childhood best friend in 2019, who was experiencing a very strenuous time in his life. After this friend attempted to overdose on various pills and other substances, Nanfelt didn’t know what else to do to help him; lyrics and emotions then came pouring out, and within an hour, his first draft of Sober was complete. His friend, to this day, attests to the fact that Nanfelt “saved his life with this song.”

Having struggled with anxiety and depression himself, Nanfelt hopes this song will become a source of inspiration for others struggling with their own mental health and sobriety. With his heart on his sleeve, he hopes that he can be an outlet for others, much like writing is for him.

The 23-year-old cites John Mayer, Ed Sheeran and Brandi Carlile as his main influences.
