Celebrating 10 Years of Netflix Profiles

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

"“Honey, you ruined my Netflix!”

Ten years ago, that single declaration led us to introduce profiles on Netflix and sparked a new way for members to enjoy their favorite shows and movies.

At the time we wanted to solve a problem that nearly every member was having. You want to watch something on Netflix but your homepage has been taken over by your scare-seeking spouse or your YA-loving teens.

This feature clearly struck a chord. Today, a majority of Netflix accounts have at least one additional profile.

Profiles allow you to have a more personalized experience with series and films recommended specifically for you. More importantly, profiles give you more choice and control (with features like autoplay, subtitles, and more) so that you can easily decide what to watch next.

And that was just the beginning. At Netflix, we’re always looking at how we can improve, so soon after we launched Kids profiles to make Netflix safe and enjoyable for our younger viewers and allow parents to implement appropriate age filters. We also added fun new ways to deepen your fandom with icons based on your favorite Netflix characters like Eleven from Stranger Things or the Truham Grammar School kids from Heartstopper. You can now transfer your profile so you can take your Continue Watching, My List and more to a new or existing account. And recently, on mobile, we just rolled out a new tab called My Netflix, with easy shortcuts to everything you’ve downloaded, saved, or already started watching.

While you probably don’t think about your profile much, it’s still a critical part in ensuring the best Netflix experience. Here are some ways to make yours even more personal:

“Like” your favorite shows or movies to get better recommendations using the thumbs up feature.

Change your audio and subtitle settings.

Make a profile for everyone in your household to make sure yours only reflects what you like to watch (not your spouse or your roommate).

The more you interact with the features on your profile and tell Netflix what you like, the more personalized your profile will become. Here’s to the next 10 years!"
