Sky today reveals the first look teaser for Sky Original Django, following the announcement that it will make its world premiere at the Rome Film Festival on October 16.

The Sky and CANAL+ production, is a high-concept reimagining of the classic Western, which will be available in all Sky markets and will be coming to the UK on Sky Atlantic and NOW in 2023.

Loosely based on Sergio Corbucci’s eponymous cult classic film, Django stars the award winning Matthias Schoenaerts (The Danish Girl, The Mustang, Bullhead, Rust and Bone) as the iconic title character, alongside Nicholas Pinnock (For Life, Counterpart, Top Boy) as John Ellis, visionary founder of the town of New Babylon, Lisa Vicari, (Luna, Dark) who plays Django’s daughter Sarah, and Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, What Happened to Monday?) in the role of John’s powerful and ruthless enemy Elizabeth Thurman.

Rounding out the cast are Jyuddah Jaymes (Clique, Criminal: UK), Benny O. Arthur (Get Lucky, Alexanderplatz) and Eric Kole (Fifty Pence, Hold) as John Ellis’s children and Tom Austen (The Royals, Grantchester) as cowboy Eljiah Turner.

Set in Texas in the late 1800s, Django is a jaded cowboy in search of the daughter he thought he'd lost. In following her trail, he comes upon New Babylon, a town at the bottom of a crater, where all outcasts are welcome and where everyone is equal and free. Here, Django discovers that his 20-year-old daughter Sarah is alive and set to marry John Ellis, the founder of New Babylon. Sarah – who blames her father for the death of their family, massacred many years earlier while he was at war – wants Django to leave. But he refuses to give up and does everything in his power to get a second chance with her, becoming a valuable ally for Ellis, who must defend the town from Elizabeth Thurman's attacks. Unbeknownst to them, Django, John, and Sarah are linked by a web of secrets and a dark past bound to resurface.

Django is an Italian-French co-production created and written by Leonardo Fasoli (Gomorrah the Series, ZeroZeroZero), alongside Maddalena Ravagli (Gomorrah the Series) who also co-wrote the series’ treatment with Francesco Cenni and Michele Pellegrini. Completing the writing team is Max Hurwitz (ZeroZeroZero, Manhunt), who wrote two teleplays.

Filming took place in Romania, between Racos, Bucharest and the Danube area, where Francesca Comencini (Gomorrah the Series), David Evans (Downton Abbey) and Enrico Maria Artale (Romulus) share directing duties.

The 10x60 series is produced for Sky and Canal + by Cattleya – part of ITV Studios - and Atlantique Productions (part of Mediawan) and co-produced by Sky Studios and CANAL+, in collaboration with StudioCanal TV and Odeon Fiction, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Romanian government.

International distribution is by STUDIOCANAL.
